BRENT COUNCIL BANS MOTORCYCLES SHOCK

In a possibly unprecedented move, Brent council have banned all motorcycles from using a stretch of road in N London. Admittedly, Rainsford Road was being abused by a bunch of total prats, who happened to be on bikes. There are laws already in existence about prattish behaviour. MAG does not feel persecuting an entire group of legitimate road users, because of the actions of a few, is appropriate use of their powers.

Latest news
MAG has made great progress in getting two types of bans on motorcycling
lifted in the London borough of Brent. Productive action and discussions
between MAG and Brent Council has led to the council changing its original
plan to make a one-off ban of motorcycling on Rainsford Road, a permanent
measure. Following input from MAG, the Council has now agreed that the ban
will be kept as a temporary ‘experimental’ measure until it is no longer
needed. Removing the ban is expected in due course, now that a key aspect
of the situation that led to the problems – namely the absence of traffic
on a brand new road – is set to change. (Please see editor’s notes below)

Action and input by MAG has also started proceedings that will pave the way
to lift the bans that currently exist, on motorcycle access to non TfL bus
lanes in the borough.

The Council introduced a one-off ban in Rainsford Road on August 12 as an
‘Experimental Scheme’, in response to an unprecedented level of problems
caused by the anti-social behaviour of a handful of irresponsible
motorcyclists. They had turned a new but rarely used road into a race track
and stunt arena. Despite huge efforts by the local police and in the face
of police vehicles being attacked, the problems continued to upset and
endanger residents and users of the nearby Middlesex Hospital.

Now, after productive discussions with MAG, the Council has agreed that the
need for the ban will go and it can be lifted in due course. A detailed
examination of the situation showed that the road will no longer be left
devoid of traffic, as the developer who built it is starting work on the
site, as he now has permission to build housing as well as offices.

Speaking for MAG, National Chairman John Mitchell says: “The Rainsford Road
situation was more complex than it seemed at face value. MAG deplores any
move to restrict motorcycling on any section of public roads, however, we
are led to believe that all realistic alternatives had been tried to tackle
a huge range of problems caused by an irresponsible few. Now though, after
productive engagement with the council, we are confident that a way has
been found to lift the Rainsford Road ban in due course, and others that
currently apply to the Borough’s network of bus lanes.”

Editor’s notes
Thorough investigation by MAG of Brent Council’s decision to ban
motorcycles from a backstreet in the London Borough revealed that the
situation and the level of problems is unique.

Problems included 174 reported bike crashes in a year and a death looked
inevitable with bikes doing 80+mph past a hospital into the night. The full
list of problems was huge and included attacks on police vehicles. No
fatalities so far ruled out the use of automated speed cameras, and traffic
calming was out for other reasons. All policing options were considered or
tried which left one way to go. CCTV was already there but prosecutions
with that evidence required a court case each – whereas enforcing traffic
signs for an experimental bike ban could be automated.

Campaign regarding proposed EU Regulation on Type Approval and Market Surveillance of two and three-wheeled vehicles

A raft of issues emanating from Europe will have a profound effect on riders and the motorcycle industry generally. Some of these are driven by the EU Commission, like the new Type Approval and Market Surveillance Regulation that will see the introduction of compulsory ABS, the sealing of powertrains from the airbox, through the engine to the final drive (including the diameter and aspect ratio of the rear tyre), restrictions on the aftermarket industry, possible roadside checks by police or other government agencies to inspect emissions, detect owner ‘tuning’ and more.

Leeds MAG Comedy Curry and Cupcakes Night July 2013

Our first ever Comedy, Curry and Cupcakes night was a huge success. See below for some photos from the night.

Leeds MAG Comedy, Curry and Cupcake night

At the last Leeds MAG AGM in February, I asked for fresh ideas for fundraising, to stop things getting stale…………step forward Helen Taylor with the idea of a comedy night!
A date of 23rd July was set and Lynn the landlady of our meeting pub offered to make a curry and it was also suggested that, with all the fantastic bakers in the ranks of the Leeds MAG ladies, cupcakes (buns!) would be made and sold. The plan was formed for the inaugural Leeds MAG Comedy, Curry and Cupcake night!
The main comedian, the brilliant Danny Pensive, offered to do an extremely discounted price if we were to include a charity in the recipients of any profit, so it was decided that we would split the money 50/50 between MAG and the NABD.
Helen managed to secure the services of four more comedians over the following few weeks and the interest around the night grew very quickly. On the day, Kate, our treasurer, made ninety six cupcakes and some of the other girls also dusted off their pinnies for the cause. The evening started with me arriving at The Cross Keys to find it turned into a comedy club! Tables and chairs laid out with a sound system in place on the stage.
People started to arrive from very early and soon the car park was overflowing with bikes and cars to the point that people were having to park in the chippy’s car park over the road.
After our MC for the night, Patrick Devine, had got things warmed up nicely we had a set each from two local up and coming comedians, Karl White and Simon D Heaven who both went down well. This was followed by a break for the curry supper, which was fantastic and roundly enjoyed by everyone.
Next up was the deadpan James Christopher and then the main attraction, Danny Pensive who absolutely brought the house down! The night was a roaring success, with lots of happy, smiling faces asking when the next one will be.
When we totted up we made £398 profit, so it was rounded up to make it £200 each for MAG and the NABD. A fantastic effort all round and extremely enjoyable to boot.
See you at the next one……

Leeds MAG “40 Years of action” day

After a week of wet and windy conditions, we awoke on Saturday 25th May to the weather that we’d ordered, which was blue skies and sunshine.
When we met up at Squires café and the car park was packed!
At 1pm we left in convoy to head to West Leeds Sports and Social club via a circuit of the city centre. Just over 200 bikes and trikes met up with the police escort on the outskirts of Leeds and we were treated to a lap and a half of the city centre loop, with waving pedestrians on every corner, then on to the venue for the days activities.
Upon arrival we all parked up and everyone started shedding the layers to lap up the scorching weather, whilst enjoying a beer and a burger, while the judges got busy choosing the winners of the bike show.
After an afternoon of chilling out the evening party commenced. We had planned a “battle of the bands” but were let down by one band on Thursday and then another on Friday, leaving us with just one new band called “Dirty Vinyl” who agreed to act as a support band at the last minute to the brilliant Suicide Blonde.
Everyone was very impressed with Dirty Vinyl and even more so, when it was announced at the end of their set that it was only their fourth gig! So we booked them for our Halloween party on the spot! – We’ve certainly unearthed a talent.
A rip roaring day was finished off at 3am, with an impromptu and very drunken game of killer (pool) which added another £20 to MAG funds after the winners Dawn and Sid donated their prizes to MAG.
Winners on the day were…… Best bike – Gary Hirst’s R1
Best Trike – Wooley’s Zetec
Best Custom – Anton Mack’s Harley
Best Scooter – Abby Benton’s Sinnis
Gary Strain memorial best in show – Gary Hirst’s R1
The “name the dog” was won by J. Butterfield who took “Shep” home with him!
Many other raffle prizes, donated by local dealers, were found new homes, apart from pink 261-265 and pink 251-255 (contact Manny to claim if you’re a winner)
The biggest winner though was MAG with the day raising just over £600 profit!
Well done to all the bikers who helped on the day and special mentions must go to Team Sober, GEMCC, Huddersfield MAG and the couple from Manchester who stayed all day and rode back home at midnight! Bring on the next 40 years!
